In contrast to the current Racine Campus, the Wisconsin Humane Society’s shelters in Milwaukee and Ozaukee Counties are beacons of hope for animals and people. Lodging spaces are clean, quiet, and bright. Separate wards allow animals to be segregated, reducing disease transmission and stress. Multi-purpose spaces provide opportunities for community involvement and programming.
The animals in Racine County deserve no less. A new facility will enable us to create a nurturing, enriching habitat for comfortable care, speedy recovery, behavior modification and socialization with people.
The proposed 16,000 square foot WHS Racine facility will provide more than twice as much space as our current shelter, thus permitting ward segregation to reduce stress and disease transmission. Inside, the shelter will offer clean, quiet and dignified housing, dedicated veterinary space and a multi-purpose community room, which could accommodate volunteers, classes, public waiting space, and youth programs.
Separate and flexible lodging spaces will allow us to address the most critical animal-related issues in our community, including overpopulation, abuse and neglect. Increased visibility will promote strengthened access to the shelter and its services.
The new Racine Campus will be located on a 5-acre, highly visible, parcel of land in the Village of Mount Pleasant, just south of Highway 20 and east of I-94.
