Xena Heals from Surgery
Xena has an enormous smile that illuminates a whole room. Even when veterinarians examined her sensitive ear, Xena grinned at the staff and let out a low groan. She was grateful for the attention and seemed to know that all the fuss was truly important.
Xena was surrendered to the Wisconsin Humane Society because her guardian could no longer afford to care for her. The 10-year-old Australian Shepherd Mix arrived with almost puppy-like energy, but her medical exams quickly revealed a hematoma in her right ear. The walls of the ear were over an inch thick, so filled with blood and fluid that a rupture could have occurred at any moment. Xena was at high risk for a serious infection. The veterinarians knew that Xena needed immediate surgery.
Under anesthesia, our veterinary staff cleaned out Xena's ear, drained all the fluid that was causing Xena so much discomfort and secured her sutures with plastic film. As her ear heals, the ear stent will help protect Xena's ear from infection. Until she was fully healed, Xena stayed at WHS under the close supervision of veterinary staff.
Xena's surgery, medicines, medical treatment, food and accomodations cost nearly $750. The animals at WHS depend entirely upon the generous support of donors who recognize that WHS receives no government funding. Thanks to these generous donations, the expense of Xena's care was completely covered and it wasn't long until she was able to be adopted into a new home.
