Manners Class

Here's what's happening this week at the Wisconsin Humane Society!

This Week's Events and Classes
Feb 7, 2010 - Feb 13, 2010

Sunday, February 7, 2010
This event requires a ticket Clever Canine Tricks Class 9:30 AM

This class will teach you how to get the behaviors you want from your dog (not just tricks!). This class is a great introduction on how dogs learn and will expand your dog’s training foundation using reward-based clicker training. You will learn how to capture, lure and shape a variety of behaviors. This is fun for the whole family and you will have the opportunity to show off your favorite trick at the end!

Learning tricks can be entertaining, but can also be functional, such as preparing for search and rescue or therapy work with your dog. This type of training reveals your dog’s natural abilities and is a great way to build confidence and creativity in your dog.

We will introduce a wide range of tricks, including, but not limited to the following:

  • open & close doors, only when you want them to
  • pick objects up with their mouth;
  • rollover
  • spin
  • bow
  • carry a basket
  • sit up/sit pretty
  • jump through a hoop
  • weave through your legs
  • walk backwards
  • play dead
  • find objects
  • leave objects once they find them
  • and more.

 Prerequisites:

  • Dogs must be 6 months of age or older.
  • Must have completed a group class of either Puppy or Adult Manners Class, or get instructor’s approval.
  • Dogs must be able to sit, lie down and stay while you walk to the end of the leash.
  • Handler and dog must be familiar with clicker training.
  • Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people. Shy and fearful dogs can benefit from this type of training, but dogs showing aggression will not be allowed in class. If you have an aggressive dog, please call us for a private consultation & training at 414-431-6173.
  • Dogs will need to be vaccinated for Rabies, Distemper and Bordatella (Kennel Cough) by the first day of class for safety. Please bring your dog's vaccination records to the first class.

Social dogs only, please!!  Dogs that have shown any prior aggression to other dogs or people are NOT allowed in the group class setting under any circumstances (including if you already paid for the class). Aggression can not be addressed in this venue; you will not get the attention you deserve and it puts others at risk. Please call us for private training to get the best behavior treatment for your companion either in your home or privately at this facility.

Class meets once a week for 50 minute sessions for 4 consecutive weeks and is $65. All ages and experience levels are welcome in this class, from 6 months old to geriatric dogs (yes, old dogs can learn new tricks!). Class size is limited, so advance registration is required.

This event requires a ticket Pooch Playtime 1:30 PM

Is your dog longing to get out for more playtime and socialization?

Join us for Pooch Playtime here at the Wisconsin Humane Society! Your dog can run and play in our indoor climate controlled training center. We provide a fun and relaxing environment for playtime that is monitored by two WHS volunteers.

To help maintain a safe and healthy environment for your dog, the following requirements apply:

- He must be social and appropriate with other dogs and strangers.  Aggressive behavior will not be allowed
- He must be current on three vaccinations; Distemper, Rabies, and Bordetella
- Neutered or spayed

Only $7.00 per dog for each 45 minute play session, limited to 8 dogs. Pre-registration is required!

Please Note:
Pooch playtime is not for every dog. We want to provide a safe and healthy environment for dogs who already know how to play appropriately and give guardians a chance to relax and have fun with their dogs. This is not the place to bring your dog if you are trying to work on problem behaviors.
If your dog is having arousal or assertive tendencies when near other dogs or people, please call the WHS Behavior Hotline at 414-431-6173. We provide one-on-one consultations to help you teach your dog how to respond appropriately to a variety of situations using reward-based humane methods.

This event requires a ticket Puppy ABC's Class 6:30 PM

Thank you for your interest in Puppy ABC's (Appropriate Behavior Class)! Please be sure to look over the requirements for our program.

This is the start date of a six week class.  Puppy ABC classes meet for 50 minutes every week on the same day and time for 6 consecutive weeks. Enrollment fee is required for each dog at the time of registration. The fee for dogs adopted from WHS is 105.00 and $125.00 for non-WHS alumni. Tickets are "per dog" not "per person".

All of our classes use reward based training techniques where we will teach you how to use a clicker for training. Your puppy will be taught in a positive learning environment where he or she will have fun!

Your puppy will learn some very important cues like sit, down and wait at the door, with an emphasis on socialization and handling to allow all puppies to be successful, polite adult dogs. This class is a great primer for our Dog Manners Class for dogs over 5 months of age.

We will socialize them to other puppies by having supervised play sessions several times each class period and present new objects, such as agility equipment, to help build their confidence in every class. We will help you get your puppy accustomed to handling to prevent them from becoming fearful when they are examined at the vet. We will teach you about dog behavior and provide you with the tools that you need to train your puppy on your own. You will be given homework every week so that you can practice at home what you learned in class.

Social dogs only, please!!  Dogs that have shown any prior aggression to other dogs or people are NOT allowed in the group class setting under any circumstances (including if you already paid for the class). Aggression can not be addressed in this venue; you will not get the attention you deserve and it puts others at risk. Please call us for private training to get the best behavior treatment for your companion.

This class is for dogs under 5 months of age.

If you are a volunteer at the Wisconsin Humane Society, please do not sign up on-line, but call Nora at 414-431-6156.

**** ALL PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE ****

If you decide not to attend the class date in which you are registered your payment will be used for the animals in our non-profit facility. If you are uncertain whether our classes will meet your expectations, you are welcome to sit in on a class (without your dog) before you pay. Just give us a call!

VACCINATIONS: All dogs need to be current on their Rabies (if over 4 months of age), Distemper, and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines before the first class. Be sure to bring your vaccination records with you to the first class! Please check your records because even if you adopted from us, you may not have all the vaccinations needed for class.

Guardians/Handlers must be at least 18 years old and children under 8 are not allowed to attend.  We limit classes to 10 puppies and provide a trainer and assistant for all classes with a ratio of 1 person to 5 puppies.
