Teacher Workshop on Cross-curricular Humane EducationKids Night Out
The Wisconsin Humane Society is thrilled to partner with Alverno College's Telesis Continuing Education Program to offer Kindness in the Classroom: Cross-curricular Humane Education. Humane education does more than simply teach care for animals; it incorporates values that are stressed in character education like respect, responsibility and citizenship. Educators will learn multidisciplinary and standards-based activities that incorporate humane and character education into the classroom. The class will meet on two Wednesdays: October 23 and November 6. Click here for more details and registration information.

Great PAL Pic.jpgPeople and Animals Learning (PAL) Program Celebrates Another Great Summer of Being Kind to Animals!

This summer, the Wisconsin Humane Society hosted the PAL program for 34 underserved Milwaukee youth and 18 shelter dogs. PAL seeks to increase children's self-esteem and pro-social skills like empathy and positive conflict resolution, whichi research shows decreases a child's likelihood of becoming involved in violence. During the two-week program participants worked in pairs to train a shelter dog basic cues. The training program helps PAL kids gain experience and responsibility and feel the joy of achievement, and also helps the dogs be better prepared for an adoptive family. Participants also socialize cats and worked with ducklings at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

A special thanks to all who nominated young people for this amazing program! If you are interested in nominating a child for this program for the summer of 2014 or would like more information about the program, please click here. The updated PAL application will be available in January of 2014.
