Dr. Karen Overall - Rational Use of Behavioral Medications for Cats & Dogs: How to Use What When

This all-day program is designed to introduce the concept of rational use of behavioral pharmacology for dogs and cats.  Topics covered will include understanding the neurochemicals that will be affected, medication classes and uses, the molecular and neurochemical bases of fear, anxiety, aggression and learning, appropriate choice of medication, monitoring for compliance and side effects, and use in dogs and cats that may have other physiological issues.  This course is targeted to trainers, veterinarians and veterinary support staff.

Dr. Karen Overall received her BA and MA degrees concomitantly from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978, and her VMD from its School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. Dr. Overall received her PhD in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and completed a residency in Behavioral Medicine at Penn in 1989. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behavior (ACVB) and is certified by the Animal Behavior Society (ABS) as an Applied Animal Behaviorist. 

Morning session will cover the following topics:
  Conditions which may be helped by behavioral medication:
     •separation anxiety
     •noise phobias
     •fear
     •generalized anxiety
     •OCD
     •most canine aggressions, including interdog aggression 

  Specific drugs and drug classes: the science behind how they work          •TCA’s (Clomicalm)
     •SSRI’s (Reconcile)
     •Benzodiazepines (Xanax / Alprazolam)
     •MAOI’s (Anipryl)
     •Plus – what not to use and why 

Afternoon session will cover the following topics:
- Considerations for dogs with physical illness, pain or multiple conditions
- Medical concerns of how we can keep troubled dogs healthy. 
- Use of psychotropic medications to help treat medical conditions
- Effects of psychotropic medications and their assessments
- Rational polypharmacy  
- Dietary intervention, supplement use and other treatment strategies
- When to refer to a specialist: what a veterinary behaviorist can offer
- Videos and case histories of patients treated with medication

As well as

- Examples of the rational use of behavioral pharmacology that is coupled with and facilitates behavior modification
- Monitoring for client compliance with follow-up and working with good  trainers: developing this essential relationship
- Special issues pertaining to controlled substances
