Robbie was surrendered to a small shelter by a man who said he was moving and couldn’t take his dog with him.  He also said the dog had been shot, that’s why the little guy had a splint on his leg.  Without knowing the extent of Robbie’s injury, the shelter didn’t think they’d be able to place him. They decided to ask us for help.

Robbie arrived at the Wisconsin Humane Society in early May with bright eyes and a severely fractured left rear leg. He couldn’t put any weight on it and fell down if he tried.  But, that didn’t prevent him from hopping over to our medical staff to say hello.

WHS Veterinarians examined him, took x-rays and met to discuss what they could do to save his leg. Unfortunately for Robbie, surgery was the only answer. It was decided that WHS surgeon, Dr. Banwart, would attempt the repair with pins which were successfully implanted. Robbie was given strict cage rest until the pins were removed to ensure the best chance of success.

That was tough for the little trouper because he was only 5 years old and he wanted to be active, whether he was rolling in the grass or greeting people.

Veterinarians monitored the healing of Robbie’s leg for weeks waiting to see if the bone would grow together, but Robbie didn’t heal. Much to WHS medical staff’s disappointment, the x-rays showed the same fracture. To save his leg, a plate needed to be inserted onto the bone and the healing proceeded more quickly as the plate ensured a stronger bond between the pieces of bone.

We needed help to pay for a specialist to do this extensive surgery and monitor the progress until Robbie was completely recovered. The surgery itself cost nearly $4,000 not including the continuing examinations from the specialist. We received the funds we needed to care for Robbie extensive care thanks to donations we received.

One of the many who donated to Robbie went one step further by opening his heart and his home to this wonderful little dog. He willingly adopted him despite his special recovering restrictions and continued rechecks. His compassion is evidence of the wonderful home he has given Robbie!
