Jade in Habitat

Jade, as he recovered in a habitat
designed for herons.

They have a wingspan of nearly six feet. These magnificent birds inspire visitors at Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers with their beauty and grace as they hunt for fish. Their greatest defense is their large pointed bill.

Yet, despite their strength and beauty, a young Great Blue Heron was brought to the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital in serious condition. Jade was admitted to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital severely emaciated and dehydrated.

Young Jade didn’t perfect his hunting skills before the hot summer temperatures soared into the high 90’s. Jade was found weak, thin and overheated on a busy corner in downtown Milwaukee. He was rushed to the WHS Wildlife Hospital where the dedicated staff immediately began assessing his condition. In addition to being severely dehydrated, the heron was well below what is considered to be a healthy weight, weighing only 75% of what he should. The wildlife team worked quickly to rehabilitate him.

Jade's recovery continued and he began to eat on his own. He enjoyed many fish every day and it wasn't long before his weight was stable and he was ready to be released!

Jade was released into the beautiful Scout Lake Park in Greendale. He didn't waste any time hiding from the cameras and people milling about to say goodbye. After a few minutes, Jade took flight and soared to a perch on the other side of the lake. The Wildlife Rehabilitation staff is confident that Jade will live a long and fish-filled life in his new habitat, far away from the busy downtown!
